Some people don't get it... But we're one of those families that loves to vacation at theme parks. I know - The idea of long lines, humidity, and $14 sodas spread over 31,209 daily steps isn't a lot of people's idea of a "vacation." It's a far cry from lying on the beach with a mai tai in hand. But it's become a tradition in our family. In a few weeks, we're headed to Universal Studios Florida when the kids get out of school. Recently, someone asked me why we like it so much. Here's why: When our kids were little, we went to Disney World with my sister's family. But we couldn't afford it, so we made some...adjustments. Instead of flying from Colorado, we drove. Instead of sleeping in a hotel, we stayed at a campsite. Instead of eating at restaurants, we packed peanut butter sandwiches. It's common to spend about $10K on a vacation like this... And we spent $2k (I know because I tracked it in a spreadsheet). I vowed, someday, to, y'know, sleep in a hotel and eat at a restaurant. It's different now. We fly. We stay in the hotel we want. We upgrade to the Express Pass. We eat whatever we want. It's great. To me, a nice theme park vacation is a sign of freedom. It used to be out of reach for us, but not anymore. Which got me curious: What is something that used to be out of reach for you, that you don't think twice about now? Eating out more often? Shopping? Travel? Coffee?
