Deep Dive: More Than Business

I run a laidback business.

My list-building is automated.

Every 4-6 weeks, I run a campaign to my list to give subscribers a chance to become customers.

The list grows.

The customer base grows.

Round and round we go.

Last October, I had a "gadget workshop" on the calendar for a random Thursday.

That particular week, we had family coming in town.

No problem for me...

The workshop and slides were done, and I just needed an hour or 2 to deliver.

Then we could show them around town.

On Wednesday, the day before my workshop, my Dad got troubling health news.

He had gotten some bad blood work and rushed himself to the ER.

Turns out it was leukemia.

We didn't know the treatment plan.

The family had just arrived.

My workshop was tomorrow.

What would happen next?

DIAGNOSIS

Honestly, there was nothing I could do.

Dad was gonna stay in the hospital and do a litany of tests.

My wife took over for my mom as the host for the visitors.

I decided to keep the workshop as scheduled the next day

In hindsight, it probably wasn't my best performance.

I had a lot on my mind.

About a week later, the treatment plan was clear:

  • Chemo to keep the cancer at bay
  • A transplant to cure him

A month went by.

I hatched a plan to help.

I couldn't heal him.

But I knew how to make money troubles vanish.

THE RELUCTANT FUNDRAISER

December 2024: 2 months after diagnosis

I wanted to teach a new Workshop with two twists:

  1. I'd allow people to name their price.
  2. All proceeds would go to my Dad to offset his medical expenses.

I was on the fence about the idea.

My wife was on the fence, too.

I didn't know how people would respond to mingling my Dad's health stuff with my business stuff.

So, I took the proposal to my business mentoring membership.

After our bi-monthly office hours, I asked the lingerers on Zoom for their opinions.

They loved the idea.

We planned it out, step by step.

My jaw was set.

MORE THAN BUSINESS

Nobody could have predicted what happened next.

117 people registered for the workshop.

It raised $7,999.

That's $68 per registrant.

Later in December, we took my parents to dinner.

They had no idea what I had been up to.

After dessert, I slid an envelope across the table to my dad.

I came clean.

We all cried.

LESSON #1: MONEY REPLENISHES

I don't know how to cure leukemia.

But I do know how to turn my expertise and experience into income.

I told Dad that if he ran out of money, I'd go make more.

It's a non-issue.

Not that I'm financially wealthy.

But that I know how to make as much money as we need.

LESSON #2: PEOPLE WANT TO HELP

I was nervous to share about my Dad's health journey.

It's personal.

It's his fight, not mine.

But when I opened up to my business membership, they all supported me.

They wanted to help.

They offered prayers, encouragement, and money.

It's more than business.

Troubles come.

Tragedy happens.

It's ok to talk about.

100 NIGHT FIGHT

In early February, my Dad went to a hospital in Denver for a 100-night ordeal.

Transplant --> recover in hospital --> recover near the hospital.

He came home Friday.

Not in remission.

Cured.

Thanks for reading.
