I've been up since 3:30 a.m.

Not that I'm an insomniac; I just haven't adjusted to time yet in Rome.

I got bored of lying in bed and eventually got dressed and ventured out alone around 6:20 a.m.

First stop: a cappuccino and croissant at a cafe 2 blocks from our hotel.

Then, curiosity got the best of me, and I headed to Vatican City.

The streets were quiet.

I saw more pigeons than people as I navigated the cobblestone streets and alleyways; occasionally glancing at the route via Google Maps.

When I popped out on the main street leading to the Vatican, I stopped in my tracks.

"Whoa."

It was really beautiful, even at a distance.

I got closer and closer until I could hear the bells chiming at 7 o'clock.

It was incredible.

I texted a pic to my wife, but I knew the picture wouldn't do it justice.

You have to experience it to appreciate it fully.
