The date: Thursday, December 8th, 2022.

The time: 9:14 p.m

I was less than 12 hours from getting fired from my marketing director job.

And I was clueless.

Here's the story:

In June 2022, I took a match to the digital marketing biz I'd spent 5 years building to take a full-time position with my favorite coaching client.

I offboarded retainer clients, closed the membership, turned off the ads, and shut down the podcast.

I donned the company polo and went to work getting leads and helping the sales team.

After a few months, I started to get the "trouble in paradise" feeling.

I couldn't put my finger on it, but things had changed.

December began with my wife and I celebrating our wedding anniversary in Maui.

I flew Maui --> Seattle for a company annual planning meeting while the fam flew home to Colorado.

When I got home on Wednesday, Dec 7th, I was really confused.

Nothing happened in Seattle.

I still had my job.

Maybe everything was fine?

Back to Thursday, Dec 8th...

After the kids went to bed, my wife lounged on the couch.

I headed downstairs to prep for our Friday morning marketing meeting.

But I also had an 8 am meeting with the big boss.

I lingered at the top of the stairs and told my wife, "I thiiiiink everything is ok with this job... but if it's not, I'm going to bring back live events, a coaching program, and a membership."

I worked for a bit, went to bed, and set my alarm for the Friday morning call.

The 8 a.m. Zoom was mercifully quick.

By 8:07 a.m. I was informed my services were no longer needed.

I was shocked.

I trudged up the stairs.

My wife was making coffee.

I didn't say anything.

I couldn't say anything.

I didn't need to.

Christy saw me and said, "DID THEY FIRE YOU?!"

I nodded as the tears came.

She hugged me and repeated, "It's not your fault," while I repeated, "I'm so sorry."

Alongside the fear, shame, and uncertainty, I felt an enormous sense of dread.

I spent five years building a pretty decent business and burned it down for a job that barely lasted 6 months...

Now, I had to start over.

I spent the rest of December grieving, praying, and plotting.

And by January, I was ready to get back at it.

I hosted workshops, VIP Days, and live events.

Now? 2 years later...

I know that landing and losing that dream job was the best thing that could have happened to me.

It forced me to reevaluate my priorities, offers, and lifestyle.

Instead of building a business back with hustle, grit, and grind...

I'd build a leveraged business with strategy.

VIP Days gave me a front-row seat to what other online business owners struggled with.

A live event brought me face-to-face with my dream clients.

The live event turned into a coaching program.

The VIP Days turned into a cohort-based program.

And I've sprinkled in a few boot camps, workshops, and memberships to keep things interesting.

I tell you this because...

If you're feeling like the world is against you...

Or your business isn't quite what you hoped it'd be...

Or you're in the "waiting room" of life, waiting for your number to be called...

You're not alone.

I've been there.

Don't give up.

Embrace the vision.

Keep at it.

You got this,

~ Cody

P.S. If you'd like my help making 2025 epic, it's not too late to snag your seat to this workshop I'm hosting this week.
