The right people.

A year ago today, I hosted my first live event after getting fired 6 months prior. I called it "List Build & Launch" and it was held at a boutique hotel here in Colorado Springs. But a few weeks before the event I almost canceled it. Why? I only had 14 people signed up. By the time the event kicked off, I was down to 12 people. I used to get really disappointed when I didn't have the numbers I wanted. Everyone wants more leads, sales, customers, webinar registrants, and event attendees,...

A few years back, I joined a YouTube coaching program. I learned the best day of the week to post your video... The optimal length of your video (including the frequency of "cuts")... The perfect lighting and framing of your video... ...The prescribed volume, cadence, and rhythm of posting on YouTube. And then... I did nothing. I got overwhelmed. I felt bad that my video was 7 minutes (too short, apparently) and not 12 minutes ("perfect", allegedly) I was embarrassed to have cuts happening...

When I first started my online business, I tried and failed to make my mark as a "funnel guy." I was like a Diet Coke Russell Brunson. A Kirkland Signature Ryan Deiss. A "Dr. Thunder" Dan Kennedy. I had a hard time differentiating myself in a crowded marketplace. I couldn't find a unique hook which meant I had to work harder than normal to get clients. Everything felt like a grind... It was like I was pushing a boulder up a hill. So when I returned online in Jan '23, I knew I had to find a...

I used to email my list whenever I had something to promote. If I had a webinar coming up, I'd send a sale-sy email. Otherwise? Nothing. Weeks would pass between emails. Sometimes months. It was a terrible strategy. I knew the power of email but didn't know what to do. A few years back, I decided to start sending a daily email. I was nervous because I wanted to sound smart in my emails. I wanted to have profound breakthroughs and mind-blowing discoveries to share with my audience. So, on...

You know what's better than a 2-week vacation? Answer: A 2-week vacation where your work to-do list doesn't pile up. My wife and I just returned from our epic Italy trip with my parents to help them ring in their 50th wedding anniversary. I'm sitting on my couch next to my 10-year-old greyhound; the boys are playing in the basement. It's good to be home. Before I opened up ConvertKit to send you this email, I checked my calendar for the week. It looks great. A couple of 1-1 calls with my...

What if you could charge more and have your customers do the work for you? That would be cool, right? Well, that's exactly what we saw in Italy a few days ago. We just touched down in NYC from Milan, but a few days ago, we were in Venice. My wife and I sat canal-side at a coffee shop, eating apple pastries and sipping cappuccino. We saw a boat approaching, which is very common. But as it neared us, I could see that the customers were the ones rowing the boat. I checked the website on the side...

All good things must come to an end... Tomorrow, we head home from our ~12-day trip to Italy with my parents. We're sad to leave this beautiful country but very anxious to get home to our 3 boys. We've enjoyed nearly every minute of our trip. Let me explain. Back home in Colorado, when you go to a table-service restaurant, your server is a constant presence. They check on you all the time. They offer you another round of drinks. They make sure you get dessert. They leave the menu with you so...

A lot of people focus on the fringes of their business... ...Things like lovely logos, beautiful branding, handsome headshots, catchy color palettes, and clever catchphrases. This is the wrong approach. I've seen a lot of people with fancy branding go bust. The only thing that matters to the ultimate success of your business is what I call the "anchor offer." An "anchor offer" is your best offer that produces the most consistent results for the people you feel called to serve. (I break it all...

The journey through Italy continues. We head home in a few days, but today we conquered Venice. We saw the Duke's Palace. Toured St. Mark's Basilica. Sipped wildly overpriced coffee at the oldest coffee shop in Italy (Coffee Florian; founded in 1720). Enjoyed a Campari Spritz in a plaza, serenaded by an accordion player And checked off the most iconic Venetian experience of them all: a gondola ride. Yesterday afternoon, when we arrived in Venice, we stopped at a gondola station for some Q&A....

I may not know my Renaissance-era art... But I'm an expert at gelato. We're on the back half of our ~12-day trip to Italy. Today we took the train from Florence to Venice and just got back to our hotel. After dinner, as usual, we scoped out the best gelato on the route home. If you don't know, here are the rules: No Weird Colors. Bananas shouldn't be highlighter yellow. Pistachio shouldn't look like toxic sludge. And, under no circumstances should there be an electric blue bubble gum flavor....
